During the transplanting process, the roots and stems of flowers are often damaged by external forces, resulting in reduced plant yield and significant economic losses for farmers. Chenyao Xu's "Flower" protector is a protective device made of polylactic acid plastic that works on the roots of seedlings. It protects the main roots of flowers from damage from farm tools and rodents, and its protruding neck is designed to avoid direct hand contact with the stems of plants when pulled out. This allows people to pull out the growing flowers directly from the soil without causing any harm.

The "Flower" protector is produced using polylactic acid plastics injection molding. It comes in two sizes - 45*45*58mm and 80*80*110mm - to cater to different types of flowers. The product consists of two parts, which are connected by a simple bayonet. The ball-shaped bottom helps protect the main roots of the plants, while the neck provides a place for people's hands to pull out the flowers more easily.

The design project started in Hong Kong in February 2019 and was completed in November 2019. The main challenge faced by the design team, which included Xu Chenyao and Xu Le, was to create a product that was not only functional and effective but also reasonably priced. Since the "Flower" protector is an auxiliary device meant to protect flowers, it was important that its production cost, material, and technology did not exceed the value of the flowers themselves.

Despite these challenges, the "Flower" protector has been recognized for its innovative design and potential to revolutionize flower cultivation. It was awarded Silver in the A' Agricultural Tools, Farming Equipment and Machinery Design Award in 2020. The Silver A' Design Award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation.
